Why 10 minutes on a map can mean 30 minutes on snow-packed streets during Davos week.

The map is lying to you

Every mapping app on your phone is timing a dry pavement and a normal stride. Neither exists in Davos during Annual Meeting week. I've watched people book a place '10 minutes from the Congress Centre' and then miss the start of a meeting because that 10 minutes assumed July, not January.
It's not the distance that gets you. It's everything sitting on top of the distance: packed snow that's been walked into ice, a narrow Promenade full of people all moving at once, and streets that close for security with little warning, so the route you planned isn't always the route you get to take.

Uphill sections matter more than the map admits — Davos Platz has real gradient, and gradient plus ice is a different walk than gradient on dry ground. Add crowds funneling through one main street at the same hours every day, and a flat 10-minute route becomes a stop-start shuffle.
Cars don't save you here either. During peak hours the roads get as congested as the pavements, and once a street closes for a security sweep, walking is often faster than sitting in whatever's left of the traffic.

Add fifty percent to whatever the map says, minimum. If it says ten minutes, I leave fifteen — every time, not just when it's snowing, because it's usually snowing.
And the boots thing is real: bring real winter boots for the street and something better to change into once you're inside. Nobody remembers what shoes you walked in wearing. Everyone remembers if you're late.
