They require ID, photo, and police registration, and are issued by hotel and WEF security. They cannot legally be bought or sold by a third party. What Went Wrong With Badges in 2026

In January 2026, nearly 200 people who registered and paid for hotel badges in Davos were left outside. Hotels like the Grandhotel Belvédère issue badges based on approved room capacity, not registrations. Understanding how hotel badges work — ID, photo, and police registration required — prevents this.

Two different failures happened the same week.

The first was fake VIP packages for USA House. USA House is a real WEF week venue. Its organizers posted a public warning in January 2026 that external parties were selling VIP access it never authorized. The notice said the organization does not work with external resellers and will not give access to people who purchased such packages. The notice called the passes the fastest selling fiction about Davos since Thomas Mann's Magic Mountain. The warning was reported by Firstpost, Business Today, and others.

The second was a shortage of real hotel badges. Nearly 200 attendees who had registered and paid for hotel badges were left in the cold. Semafor reported the incident in January 2026. The event series was scheduled inside the Grandhotel Belvédère. Registrations exceeded the number of badges the hotel had approved.

How hotel badges work at the Belvédère

The hotel controls the allocation. The organizer requests a guest count for a specific room and time. The hotel approves a number based on room capacity and security. The hotel then issues exactly that number of badges. No more.

A hotel badge is a security credential. To issue it, the hotel security office requests ID, a photo, and police registration details. WEF security issues the final credential. Street prices for off-label badges were reported above 1,000 Swiss francs that week. Official WEF badges have been reported at up to $35,000, with annual memberships reaching seven figures for top-tier participants, per Fox Business.

What to do if your badge is not issued

Confirm your badge is issued. You need confirmation from the hotel that your ID, photo, and police registration were submitted and that your badge exists. A payment receipt for registration is not confirmation.
Do not buy from resellers. Hotels deny entry to badges that do not match their approved list.
Keep your paperwork. Registration receipt, ID submission, and hotel correspondence. The hotel resolves allocation issues. Not the street.
